Assessment & Remediation Services

Rule Engineering provides site assessment and remediation services drawing on a strong experience base in applying innovative technological strategies and sound scientific principles to develop solutions to environmental contamination problems. Our specialty is applying Risk-Based Corrective Action (RBCA) strategies beginning in early scoping of the site conceptual model to focus not only the remediation but the site assessment to manage actual or potential risks at the site. Rule has provided technical services in site assessment and remediation to a wide variety of sectors in the oil and gas industry including E&P, pipeline and transportation, refining, and retail marketing sites. Our experience working at this broad spectrum of facilities in various subsurface conditions has resulted in the successful closure of many contaminated sites that has resulted in repeat business from our clients recognizing our focus on saving money and eliminating liabilities from their bottom line.

  • Site Assessment

    The range of site assessment technologies that have been applied by Rule’s principals and staff include:

    • Standard soil and groundwater sampling using a variety of equipment such as direct push, hollow-stem augers drills, air-rotary hammer drills
    • Sampling of E&P pits and tanks for closure assessments and closure reporting
    • Routine groundwater monitoring and reporting for Monitored Natural Attenuation (MNA)
    • RBCA groundwater fate and transport modeling using a variety of software from MNA spreadsheets to finite difference numerical model MODFLOW
    • Site visualization using Rockworks geologic cross-section and 3-D model software
    • Rapid site-assessment using direct-push with mobile laboratory capabilities for real-time definition of soil and groundwater plumes
    • Free product delineation using Laser Induced Flouresence (LIF) and geophysical resistivity surveys
    • Spill response management and oversite for cost-effective rapid removal of releases
    • Hydrogeologic assessments of local and regional aquifers and develop groundwater management plans

    Remediation

    The range of remediation technologies that have been successfully applied include:

    • Air Sparging and Soil Vapor Extraction (AS/SVE) using both vertical and horizontal wells;
    • In-situ bioremediation using oxygen enhancement as well as other chemicals for anaerobic bioremediation including nitrate and sulfate amendments;
    • Landfarm remediation using traditional methods as well as enhanced biostimulation using proprietary microbes and nutrients;
    • In-situ chemical oxidation using a variety of chemicals based on site-specific bench-scale tests including Fenton’s Reagent, potasium permanganate, sodium peroxide and others;
    • Excavation of impacted soils at UST and E&P sites;
    • Groundwater pump and treat using vertical wells and engineered interceptor trenches;
    • Groundwater containment using soil-bentonite slurry walls;

    Our capabilities include state-of-the-art data management, visualization, and modeling software, as well as GIS and CAD programs.
